On the very day that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced that they were expecting, Nick Clegg, Britain’s deputy prime minister, announced that legislation will be rushed through Parliament next year to make the couple’s first-born child the heir apparent to the British throne, regardless of its gender.
